Integrated Education Committee
(統合教育委員会)
In medical education, the need for integrated education—including horizontal integration across disciplines within the basic medical sciences and within the clinical medical sciences, as well as vertical integration that merges the basic and clinical medical sciences—has long been emphasized.
Integrated education is explicitly emphasized in accreditation standards set by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and the Japan Accreditation Council for Medical Education (JACME) and has been widely implemented in Western countries. However, in Japan, many medical schools still lack clear strategies for its implementation.
The Integrated Education Committee is composed of faculty with experience in the United States and those who have already implemented integrated education in Japan, and aims to explore feasible strategies for its implementation.
It is important to remember that the aim of integration is not merely to design curricula but to foster students' ability to think and act in an integrated manner. The committee operates with the understanding that true integration ensures that students approach patient care holistically, rather than compartmentalizing their knowledge into separate "-ology" disciplines.
